The American Revolutionary War
One of the greatest reasons as to why there was the revolution in the America during the regime of British colonization was as a result of excessive taxation by the British. The British government implemented this idea of excessive tax on the American citizens after realizing that they had a great debt, which resulted from the expenses they incurred during their war with France and India. In the North America the British had many troops at the end of the Indian and the French war.The British government in the long last realized that it had been using a lot of its money to defend its colonies. A big force was required to protect the colonists from the attacks by the Indian troops. At the end of the war the British had a debt worth 140 million pounds. To solve this problem the British government came up with two solutions. Firstly, the British government had the view of strengthening the existing taxation laws together with introduction of additional taxes on the colonists. Such taxes in cluded the: 1773 tea act, 1764 sugar act, and 1765 stamp act. This was to be done so as to enable the government to cater for the cost of the troops which were stationed in the North America. Secondly, the British government gave out new proclamation to prevent the further encroachment of the Indians by the colonists.[1]They believed that this action if is put in place would eliminate the war between the colonists and the Indian, and thus the number of the troops would go down. The first measure by the British government of strengthening the tax laws and introducing additional tax act was to be implemented by passing the Revenue Act of 1764. This act was referred to as the Sugar Act by the colonies. The Act on Sugar really cut down the molasses tax, which was by then the key coloniesââ¬â¢ import. The enforcement of the previous tax was not done by the British government.1 With the introduction of the new sugar act brought in strong enforcing methods on the molasses tariffs. Under t he same Revenue Act additional items such as wine, silk and potash were subject to import tax.The American colonists reacted to the new law on the taxes with outrage. They employed all the means and the mechanisms to render such a law useless. The colonial government officials were very corrupt to extend that they allowed the entrance of molasses and other commodities to America without payment of the required import tax on them. The American colonists resisted openly the new act of revenues by the British government as much as they could.A good example on this is the sloop Polly case. Immediately after the law was passed by the parliament, she moved to a port known as Newport carrying molasses load. Despite the fact that, the indication on the tax payment were matching with the new government new revenue act, it was realized later by the port officer that the load was twice the one indicated on the shipment documents. The ship was seized under the new Revenue Act.[2]This was the fir st evidenced American colonistsââ¬â¢ defiance on the British government Revenue Act. Many of the American colonists just accepted to pay such taxes under the new Revenue Act as it was inevitable for them. The taxation itself did not case an alarm to the American colonists; however the methods which were employed to collect the taxes by the British government caused anger among the colonists.à Other issues that caused anger among the colonists were that: during the enactment of the Revenue Act concerning the taxes, they were not involved in this process. Also the taxation methods barred the American colonists in engaging in trade. On the second measure by the British government to reduce its burden of the cost they incurred in Indian and the French, was received by the American with a lot of anger and disdain. This was because it limited and interfered with their economic growth. According to the Americans the issue of protecting the Indians encroachment by the colonists had a lit tle chance to be enforced. They had the feeling that, there was no means by which the colonistsââ¬â¢ natural movement would be stopped by such proclamation.5The Revenue Act aimed at increasing the Revenue to the British government through increasing the taxes, was the major cause of the revolutionary war in America. The issue of taxation cleared the path towards the revolution. Not only did it bring the issue of resistance, but also it stimulated the thoughts of politics the resulted into the revolution. A good example is that of James Otis who resigned and went to court on the behalf of the merchants of Boston to protest the Assistance Writs. The writs of assistance gave powers to the officials of customs to break into ships, warehouses, and homes that were thought to be carrying any goods which were not transacted in the correct order based on the new Revenue Act.[3]According to Otis the British unwritten constitution fundamentals were violated by these writs. Otis was for the id ea that, despite that it was the British government that passed these writs, the local government was not supposed to enforce them. In his case Otis lost, but the writs issue which the revenue act enforcement brought forth resulted to be an expanding colonial list of grievances against the British colonial government.[1] Reich Jerome. Hamlet, By William Shakespeare - 1308 Words
Hamlet is arguably one of the greatest tragedies in all of literature and when most people think of tragic plays, they think of none other than the one who wrote it, William Shakespeare. This classic story of revenge excites itââ¬â¢s readers with its main character, Prince Hamlet, who goes through the unique human-like process of revenge that is often overlooked. Many other stories rely heavily on the logic of good people doing good things and bad people doing bad things just for the sake of their nature. When the players arrive, Hamlet pleads for them to give a speech about the death of Priam, the king of Troy, who was killed by Pyrrhus as revenge for the death of his father, Achilles. After the speech, he plans for the next day and asks one of the players to perform The Murder of Gonzago with an included additional speech written by Hamlet, which is a trap to ââ¬Å"catch the conscience of the king.â⬠(2.2.558) Shakespeare starts the passage with self-criticism and Hamlet saying that he is alone. At first glance, the reader may overlook this line and perceive it this as Hamlet being physically alone since Rosencrantz and Guildenstern have just exited the stage, but this could also be looked at on a emotional non-physical level. Even though Horatio and Marcellus knew of the encounter, he alone is tasked by the ghost of his late father to avenge his death by himself. His feigning insanity isnââ¬â¢t helping him either, as many began to shun him and eventually go as far as sending to send him off to England. In this soliloquy, Hamlet is noticeably tough on himself. Soylent Green Euthanasia Free Essays
English 20 Soylent Green Euthanasia Soylent Green was based on the short story by Harry Harrison entitled ââ¬Å"Make Room! Make Room! â⬠It offers solutions to many near future problems. Overpopulation is one. Euthanasia is another. We will write a custom essay sample on Soylent Green Euthanasia or any similar topic only for you Order Now Feeding the masses is yet another. In fact euthanasia is a solution to the problem of overcrowding. What I choose to deal with here is euthanasia. Simonson, a character in the book, helps himself to the latterââ¬â¢s food, liquor, bathroom, and books. Through this he discovers the nefarious deeds of the Soylent Company, The entity that feeds people. He treats it as a necessary evil. A concept that pulls the hearts strings of all readers. In the story food is provided for the overpopulated world by a lottery where old people are killed in euphoric ways to provide food. The meals are called Soylent green. Some people are aware of what the lottery is for, some are not. These are important for the fact that overpopulation in todayââ¬â¢s society is already a problem. I will address that later. The movie is very disturbing. The idea that humans are food for other humans strikes the wrong cord in the reader, as it should. That is the authorââ¬â¢s intention. The movie and the story are made to provoke a viewer to think about different perspectives. The one that stuck with me the most is Euthanasia. I disagree with the authorââ¬â¢s inedited meaning. Personally I feel that euthanasia should be allowed. Not out of necessity but because people should not suffer. To address the modern day relevancy it must be mentioned at the time of the book and movie. It was understood mathematically that eventually there would be too many people to feed. It is the same way today and the number of people that are growing every year is such that it is exponentially. Also euthanasia is constantly debated today. Some people believe that it is an issue reserved for only Gods judgment. I. E. it will never be a human beings decision. The other point of view is that free choice is what is given by god. Again the author is not debating those two issues when it comes to euthanasia. He is debating the first I mentioned. That euthanasia is a moral issue vs. the issue of human survival. Euthanasia is a religious, ethical, and moral issue in this county. It is one that is shunned by our society in the fact that no one wants to talk about it. The view of many Christians is that when you are called to heaven it is your turn. However, the last six months of your life are usually the most expensive time of life. A person can live a century and in that time, become incapacitated of time and place. In this instance, the physician and government officials have to make the decision to euthanize. Morally, families usually decide and carry out loved oneââ¬â¢s last wishes. Funeralââ¬â¢s are arranged, people die, are remembered, and then buried. It needs to be noted that in many European counties euthanasia is allowed. A kindly death for the elderly is the European sentimentality. Personally I agree with the concept. The movie treats it in a way that is defiantly negative. Again I agree with euthanasia, a safe comfortable death for those at the end of their life. The movie showed the detrimental side of euthanasia. The fact that the people were not aware of being turned into food is humorous. Truly, I find it hilarious. The story is one that shows the dangers of overpopulation and government control. Forgive me again, for laughing but the irony that is inherent in the movie makes me laugh to no end. Actually what harm is done by people becoming food unwillingly? IT needs to be noted that in the movie Dr. Pianka had mixed feelings about the creation of Soylent green. On one he had was feeding the multitude; on the other hand he was taking lives. How would you feel about such a dichotomy? Personally I feel that the ends justify the means. Truly, debating the intention of the debating author is clear. He hopes that this future is one that WILL not happen! At the same time Harry Harrison realizes it is a possibility. This is Something that we as humans should be aware of. The possibility that people could be sterilized by the true ââ¬Å"progressivesâ⬠is truly disturbing. In conclusion, Soylent Green is a movie that provokes the mind, spirit, and soul. The truth that the world will soon be overpopulated is so close to coming true! The creators of the movie show that. It wants nothing more for us; as human beings to understand that this is an issue that will have to be dealt with eventually. Also it wants us to understand that not every option is the best option. Road of Optimism Essay Example For Students
Road of Optimism Essay English Essay In Jack Kerouacs novel, On the Road, the protagonist, Sal Paradise, offers us a very optimistic view of life. He enjoys the spontaneity of life, and his adventures. He has a very high expectation for the future. For both Sal and Dean, this novel is their youthful exuberance and optimism for new experiences. The energetic beat of the jazz music called bop, their dream to find IT and their idealistic approach to life are just some of the evidence of optimism present in the book. Sal and Deans goal is to find the freedom and happiness of the open road. The road symbolizes Sal and Deans optimism outlook on life which near the end of the book changes for Sal. The road represents Sal Paradises optimism for the future. His blind-optimism can be seen be throughout the book. For instance, when he says I will stay on 6 all the all the way to Ely, I said to myself and confidently started. (10) it shows his lack of worries and his optimism for the success of the trip. He thinks that one road will take him from the east of America all the way to the west. He never considers the clear possibilities for disappointment. Sal travels across the country and is enjoying the new scenery and group of people he meets while hitchhiking. He seems very carefree and tries to enjoy life as it comes. He is exposed to new towns such as the only community in America where whites and Negroes lived together voluntarily; and that was so, and so wild and joyous a place Ive never seen since.(61). This journey increases his optimistic view on life by exposing his to things he had not seen in the east, a town where blacks and whites live together harmoniously. As Sal continues down the road, his hopes get bigger and the consequences of disappointment grow larger along with those hopes. Near the end of Part One when Sal, staying in Denver with the Rawlins, takes a trek to the mountains with a group including his hosts and Tim Gray, aspirations for the short trip run high. Sal says that only a few days ago Id come to Denver like a bum; now I was all racked up in sharp suit, with a beautiful well-dressed blond on my arms (52) Sal is not disappointed with his journey on the road. When he seems to be in a dead-end, he is rescued and enters a luxurious environment. He is on top of the world and assumes that nothing can go wrong with his trip. When, Dean, Sal and Stan decide on a trip to Mexico, the wear and tear of many compiled and disparaging events begin to change Sal. At the beginning of the trip, he still believes that the road will lead him to many great things and that the trip will turn out just as it was planned. The trip begins with such enthusiasm and optimism to find the thing they have been searching for IT. The first sign of Sals change in his optimistic view is when he says Damn! It made the whole trip seem sinister and doomed (269) after he finds out that Stans bee sting is a serious matter. His reaction to the bee sting is different from his reactions to things in the beginning of the book. Perhaps if the bee sting took place in the beginning of the book, Sal might have reacted with an optimistic approach, not a pessimistic one. Sal realizes that the trip is bound to be a failure. Near the end of his trip, he says that the end of his journey on the hard, hard road led to nothing but wild whore houses. The hard, hard road connotes a terrible and exhausting journey. Sal is disappointed by the reality of life. Although he might not be as optimistic as he was in the beginning of his journey on the road, he is still optimistic enough to believe that he still has a chance to live like the normal middle class people around him and that it is not too late to start anew. .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468 , .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468 .postImageUrl , .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468 , .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468:hover , .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468:visited , .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468:active { border:0!important; } .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468:active , .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468 .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1db6c863ecbd56dc9d39f21e40cd9468:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: White Privilege as it Pertains to White and Minority College Students Essay For .

Shakespeare, William Much Ado About Nothing Compare Movie And Book Es
Shakespeare, William: Much Ado About Nothing Compare Movie and Book Much ado about nothing Branagh's Back! Deceiving All! Much Ado About Nothing, A tantalising Shakespearian play now acclaimed movie, due to the fabulous return to directing of Kenneth Branagh. This is only Branagh's second directing production but due to the successes of Henry V, he has deservingly become known as a great director. The sweeping countryside of Sicily is the home to Kenneth Branagh's dazzling new romantic comedy, Much ado about nothing. Upon returning from a victorious battle the all-star cast of Don Pedro (Denzel Washington), Don John (Keanu Reeves) the evil half-brother of Don Pedro, Benedict (Kenneth Branagh) and Claudio (Robert Sean Leonard) all stay at the monstrously huge home of Leonarto (Richard Briers). As the movie begins to unfold so do two love stories that untangles the promenade theme of deception. One of the love stories is 'deathly' serious and complicated where the other being most unlikely and very humorous. The enchanting voice of Beatrice (Emma Thompson) gaily floods the picture perfect scenery of the Much Ado About Nothing opening. The stunning beginning really tells you not to leave your seat, even for popcorn! From the opening scene it is evident that the cast enjoying a light-hearted picnic lunch are rather wealthy. The grand costuming, tremendous English-style gardens, fancy-dress masks and the wealthy aristocrats with too much time on their hands begin to deceive one-another at most opportunities. The deception begins at the masked- ball celebrating the safe return of the soldiers. The costuming for the ball is extravagant and mysterious with the people hiding behind their masks. The ball is a great success for Claudio and Hero (Kate Beckinsdale), for after the wooing of Hero by Don Pedro on Claudio's behalf the two young lovers are finally together. The wit of Beatrice and Benedict meet at the ball also where Beatrice describes to a soldier (Benedict wearing his mask) that he is no more than Pedro's jester a common fool. The quick-tongued Beatrice and Benedict are both easily deceived into believing that the two have feelings for one-another. All it takes to deceive the two is a little 'accidental' overhearing, organised by the other cast members. The lighting dims as Don John moves into the picture to address Leonarto. >From the moment that Don John replies in a hushed, villainous voice it is fitting and obvious that he is evil. Keanu Reeves's role is extremely convincing as he portrays the sixteenth centaury villain. Much ado about nothing would not be complete without this outstanding performance. The Happy ending unlike some other Shakespearian tales (Romeo and Juliet) gives the viewer a sense of justice and happiness. With the happy ending very appropriate in this story it really contributes to the final masterpiece. A sadder ending would not be appropriate in this light-hearted movie. The brilliant directing by Kenneth Branagh is shown in this Epic tale of deception in the way that William Shakespear would have wanted it. I rate Much Ado About Nothing Four and a half stars. Ryan B
